A Model's Perspective

6/9/2022

Ever wonder what it's like to be a model?

Get a glimpse of what the on & off-duty life of a model looks like through the lens of Ms Dione Tan, a talent represented by Basic Models.

Dione and I were classmates during our time in LASALLE and have worked on different projects together even after graduation. Even during our diploma days, Dione had impeccable work ethics and was able to effectively manage her time as a model and student.

This is the first edition on my quest of understanding how different individuals navigate through their respective roles in the industry. With this article kickstarting the series, I hope to collaborate with more creatives. I'd love to hear more from YOU!

Q1. How did you get into modelling?

Dione: In November 2021, I went for a model audition organised by Basic Models Management. Initially, I was not shortlisted for the training, but happened to be called out by the director during their Instagram live to have a chat with her. After meeting up with her, we had a little discussion on what I can bring to the table, & how I can change from being a freelancer to being represented. Thankfully, I was given a chance & I'm now represented by Basic Models.

Q2. Could you describe your scope/range of work for us?

Dione: My work mainly consists of catalogue, commercials, prints & content creation. Due to my height (168cm), I rarely ever step onto the runway. Nevertheless, I enjoy photoshoots a lot because I get to meet a lot of creative individuals.

Q3. As a model, what do you think of the fashion industry? Is there something that you think is good and/or what you'd like to change in the industry

Dione: As a model, I think the fashion industry in Singapore is vast now. I say this because in my perspective, I've worked with many people who are interested in fashion production (mainly fast-fashion), & the competition between these labels are rather tough. There are also influencers tapping in with collaborations alongside fashion brands. Hence, the good thing is that there's always a demand for more creative visuals to make a fashion brand stand out.

Q4. What do you think of when you start posing?

Dione: Before the shoot, I study the brand's vibe & style, which gives me an idea of how I should be posing. E.g for a blogshop with dresses, colours & prints, I usually sway around, smile & show different angles. I don't think much when I pose. It's more of rhythm & movement for me – according to the photographer's click. Whereas, for a streetwear/sportswear brand, I usually portray a cooler vibe with minimal movements.

Q5. What are your hobbies?

Dione: My hobbies are long-boarding & making content. In my free time, I love ideating on how I can better improve the content I put on my social media.

Q6. Your daily must-haves! (something you have to bring in your bag everyday etc.)

Dione: My daily must-haves = lip balm! I hate when I have dry & dull-looking lips. It comes in handy for last minute castings too. Another must-have is my hygiene pouch. It consists of – wet wipes (useful for when I dine out), panty-liner, sanitiser & eye drops! I use eye drops every time I have contact lenses on.

Q7. Any other plans in the future – other than your modelling career?

Dione: I've always wanted to be a professional animal photographer. I would definitely see myself doing content-related work. Be it for myself or a company. Currently, I am tapping onto visual effects in my personal content. So, I'm hoping to improve in presenting visuals.

Q8. The best part of being a model!

Dione: The best part of being a model is confidence & poise. You meet different people & clients all the time at work and even at events. Over the years, I realise that I'm quite open minded & confident with connecting with new people. In my heart, I may be shy but I always somehow have that confident composure when I meet new people. Not to forget – the best part is also seeing yourself at the front of campaigns, lookbooks and ads around the country or internationally. This is something that I'll look back on when I'm older and never forget doing during my youth.

Note: This was such a cool experience for me to do. It was my pleasure interviewing her and I'm looking forward to working with her more if given the chance. All the best for your endeavours Dione!

Ciao!
